German Shepherd "Buck" Day 23 of 30 Paintings In 30 Days

German Shepherd Day 23 of 30 Paintings In 30 Days

This is “Buck” the German Shepherd dog. His photo arrived in my email box from Quirky Chrissy. It was the funniest photo because Buck was actually sitting in a bathroom sink! I don’t know how he squeezed into it because he’s a German Shepherd. They aren’t exactly tiny creatures! Buck felt safe in the sink. That was his security blanket and where he went as soon as a storm rolled in. That’s adorable…until he knocks over the soap or sits on your toothbrush, right? Dogs! So funny sometimes.

German Shepherd “Buck” $45.00 6×6 watercolor and acrylic paint on Aquabord. This painting has sold.

When I was a kid I knew several people with German Shepherds. They are super loyal dogs and really smart. I have never had a German Shepherd of my own before, but I think if I wanted a dog for protection purposes I’d definitely choose this breed. Nothing bad is going to happen to you when they are around. It’s like they have sworn an oath to keep their human safe. I think of them as the Secret Service for ordinary people.

I decided to try something new when I painted Buck. I had just received some Ampersand Aquabord which is some kind of magic clay-board designed for water media. I had read about it in one of my art books. I wanted to try it. I have to say…I LOVE it! I did a quick acrylic glaze in yellow that gave the entire painting a warm glow. Then I painted Buck with layers of watercolor. Then I went back with some white acrylic paint and added in some details. I love the way it looks. It has a richness to it, doesn’t it? I am really excited and can’t wait to get my hands on some more of this aquabord! The best part is I didn’t have to worry about paper buckling from the water or doing anything special to the paper before using it. It’s sturdy and easy to store. I am looking into how to glaze and seal it so it can be hung like an acrylic or an oil painting. Have I mentioned I am an art supply addict? It’s terrible. I can’t seem to stop trying all of the things.

In case you haven’t heard, it’s time to nominate blogs for the Bloggies (an award ceremony almost as glamorous as the Academy Awards, but way more geeky because bloggers).  A few of my friends have been nominating each other and the blogs they love. If you would like to nominate some blogs for an award please take a minute to fill out the categories (at least three) with your favorite blogs and submit them to the Academy Of Blogging. I am hoping some of the little guys get noticed this year. Then in March we get to vote.

Happy Thursday!

  1. I loooooooooove this. It’s perfect. I sent it to my mom this afternoon and she was showing everyone at work. She has a really good eye for art, herself, and she TOTALLY thinks you’re super talented!
